Ayurveda Cleansing: FAQs & Concerns.

Ayurvedic Cleansing: Concerns & FAQs

If you've ever thought about diving into an Ayurvedic Cleanse, you may have questioned... What exactly does it involve? Will it feel restrictive? How will it make me feel—physically, emotionally, energetically? These are natural curiosities when approaching a tradition as rich and transformative as Ayurveda.

Tiffany Chan, Ayurvedic Health Counselor and Certified Cleanse Leader, trained by Kate O'Donnell, generously shares her knowledge and training to run through some of the frequent questions and concerns about Ayurvedic Cleansing and to invite you to ease into a 5-Day or 10-Day Ayurvedic Cleanse for the Spring.

The idea of a cleanse sounds great, but I don’t have time or I can't make the dates!

"Totally understandable—life moves fast! Ayurvedic cleansing doesn’t have to mean stepping away from everything, which is why I also offer an individual, personalized, one-on-one Ayurvedic Cleanse option.

Rooted in ancient Indian wisdom, Ayurvedic cleansing isn’t about deprivation; it’s about restoration. It’s a gentle invitation to realign your body’s natural rhythms, release what no longer serves you, and nurture balance from within.

Q & A with Tiffany Chan

1

What if I have an event or trip during a cleanse?

"It happens! If you have something planned that involves travel or dining out, you can always adjust your timing or keep things simple while you’re away. Choose lighter meals—like plain rice, steamed vegetables, or soups—and return to your cleansing rhythm afterward. A little flexibility won’t undo your progress; Ayurveda is all about balance, not perfection."

2

Do I have to give up coffee?

"You don’t have to do anything, but traditional Ayurvedic guidance suggests taking a break from stimulants like coffee to allow the body and mind to rest and rebalance. Coffee can over-stimulate the system and interfere with detoxification. Some people choose to cut back gradually or swap it for herbal teas or roasted dandelion root blends instead. You can always return to coffee later—just notice how your body feels without it first."

3

Will I get hungry?

"Ayurvedic cleansing emphasizes nourishment, not restriction. Dishes like kitchari—a warm, satisfying mix of rice, mung beans, and spices—are meant to keep you full and grounded. If you’re hungry, eat more! The goal is to feel nourished, calm, and supported while your body resets, not depleted or stressed."

4

Does Ayurvedic cleansing involve enemas or extreme detox methods?

"Not at all. Most home-based Ayurvedic cleanses are gentle and food-focused, designed to support your body’s natural ability to restore balance. More intensive therapies like Panchakarma are done under professional supervision, but everyday Ayurvedic cleansing is about simplifying your diet and routine, not pushing your limits."

5

What if I have specific health concerns?

"If you’re dealing with health conditions or you're unsure whether Ayurvedic cleansing is right for you, it’s always wise to consult a qualified practitioner before you begin. They can help you adapt the process to your needs and ensure it supports, rather than challenges, your body."

What kinds of food are usually part of an Ayurvedic cleanse?

"Most Ayurvedic cleanses center around kitchari, a simple stew made from rice, mung beans, and digestive spices. It’s easy to digest and deeply nourishing. Freshly cooked vegetables, light grains, and herbal teas are also common. Some people turn to small amounts of lean protein if needed. Over time, many discover that these soothing, grounding meals become favorites long after the cleanse is done!"
